Interventional Procedures
Fetal Blood Sampling
Fetal blood sampling is not done often now. This is because newer technologies that are less invasive can often provide the same information.
Fetal Bladder Drainage
If a fetus has obstruction of urinary outflow, a catheter can be inserted into the fetus. It will be positioned so that the bladder can then be drained into the amniotic sac which surrounds the fetus.
Amniotic Fluid Reduction
In certain conditions, the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus can be increased. This may pose an increased risk for preterm labour and preterm delivery. As well, it can cause pain and discomfort to the mother. By draining the amniotic fluid from the sac, the mother may have relief of the pain. It also may help prolong the pregnancy.
